Spider vein removal treatment works by targeting the hemoglobin in the blood vessels with a specific wavelength of light. The energy from the laser is absorbed by the hemoglobin, which causes the blood vessel to coagulate and collapse. Over time, the body naturally eliminates the destroyed vessel through its immune system. The laser energy is delivered through a small handheld device placed directly on the skin. This device delivers pulses of light that selectively heat up the targeted blood vessels without damaging the surrounding tissue.

Bruising is the most common side effect with vein treatments. This symptom can be minimized and prevented by discontinuing blood thinners such as aspirin or ibuprofen, fish oil, and vitamin E for a few days prior to treatment. After spider vein removal treatments, a slightly raised, red reaction in the treated area is normal and typically resolves in 1-2 days.
