SKIN OF COLOR MEDSPA TREATMENTS Q&A
A thorough understanding of skin of color (SOC) is absolutely essential when formulating a cosmetic treatment plan. There is no cookie-cutter approach. For example, a treatment plan for laser hair removal for light skin is entirely different from a treatment plan for dark skin. Laser is not simple; it is actually very complex and involves a lot of physics. Understanding the principles of how lasers work and affect different skin colors is key to safe and effective laser treatment.
Similarly, when introducing any physical medium – including cryotherapy or heat – to the skin, there are considerations. There is a greater risk of dyspigmentation in darker skin.
Skin of Color is more susceptible to acne because it tends to contain more sebaceous glands that are larger and produce more oil. It also typically has more skin shedding, increasing the likelihood of clogged pores. Acne is an inflammatory condition of the skin. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation usually follows as a result of having acne.
Whether darker skin tones can have chemical peels and/or microneedling has caused many misconceptions. So, to clear up these misconceptions and myths, the answer is YES, but with caution. One of the primary concerns for skin of color (SOC) when having any skin treatments is the potential to develop post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. For this reason, and many others, it crucial to have an experienced and skill skincare provider perform all SOC treatments and procedures.
When performed with caution, chemical peels can be a safe option for evening out skin discoloration and improving texture. And wearing tinted sunscreen is crucial for skin of color. Applying SPF is the best way to protect yourself against pigmentation issues, UV damage, and premature aging.
Skin care products, especially for the face, should have more water-holding ingredients than oil-holding. Hyaluronic acid containing products work extremely well because they hold water many times its weight. Glycolic acid is another great example of a product. Especially as a cleanser, it helps balance the water to oil ratio on the skin surface. This is particularly important for people with pigmented skin who will be more likely to hyper-secrete oil on the face.
